John H. Brown joined the Smith Mills Grange in North Dartmouth in 1999. He became a Dartmouth Grange member when Smith Mills Grange decided to join Dartmouth Grange in May of 2000. Mr. Brown generously set up a scholarship fund and asked the Dartmouth Grange to manage it following his death which was in 2007.
The scholarships are open to any graduating seniors from Dartmouth High School and Westport High School. The scholarship committee tries to recognize students interested in environmental science or agricultural studies, but that is not essential for applying for the scholarship. Last year the Dartmouth Grange gave a total of $44,000 in scholarships to eleven students.
Application forms are available below and they are also available online from each school. They are due on May 15th this year. Students who are to receive a scholarship will receive a letter in the mail. The John H. Brown, Jr. Scholarship is paid directly to the student at the beginning of their second semester when they present the scholarship committee with their first semester grades and the invoice for their second semester bill.
